The Quiet Heart - Putting Stress in Its Place

Peter Gruenewald
ISBN: 9780863156090 Book (Paperback) Floris Books 5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches, 112 pages September 2007
This book describes a highly effective approach to stress management and personal development, using heart-based exercises that help manage and transform extreme emotions. In this way, it is possible to deal with many forms of stress, anxiety, anger and depression without drugs or psychotherapy and to regain power over our own lives and feelings. The benefit of these unique, easily practised exercises can be felt within days. Dr Gruenewald's revolutionary holistic approach, named HeartSpheres, is based on new scientific research in neurology, psychiatry, psychology as well as cardiology and complementary medicine. Case studies record the astonishing results the author has witnessed as clients apply these techniques in their lives. This book is an essential read for anyone who wants to take their physical and emotional health into their own hands, rather than leave them exclusively in the hands of a health professional or a psychotherapist.
Review:
'The whole process is very clearly explained, so it only remains for the reader to put it into practice! Another feature of the book are the many inspiring quotations.' -- Scientific and Medical Network review, Winter 2007
'The conventional approach to cardiovascular disease - reducing cholesterol, taking more exercise - only looks at part of the picture because it does not address the patient's emotional state. Hence Dr Gruenewald's technique for improving heart health is half stress reduction and half counselling ... I have noticed a difference in my stress levels. I also felt motivated to buy a garden hammock to lie in, practising my breathing as I rock back and forth while staring at clouds.' --Emma Mahony, The Saturday Times, Body and Soul, September 29 2007

The Quiet Heart
21 Jan 2008 by Kenneth Gibson, PhD
What makes this book special is that if you do the exercises in it, they work! So if you are suffering from the stress of modern living and are dedicated to doing something about it then this book is an invaluable tool to change your life and start living it to the full. Based on years of personal and clinical experience, the author Dr. Peter Grünewald has developed a combination of relaxation and positive thinking exercises, which in the initial stages are not easy to master, but the inner resistance is soon overcome to produce remarkable results. This is evidenced by a series of case studies that intersperse the text written by individuals who have clearly benefited from doing the exercises on a regular basis and have become more skilled over time. Many speak of feeling more relaxed and energised; of gaining more confidence to deal with the everyday things in life or finding positive ways to transform a difficult relationship or family situation. As Teresa Hale says in the foreword to the book `The Quiet Heart gives us tools with which we can transform our negative thoughts and emotions so we can create a positive outlook and experience the harmony and love which is our birthright'. I can highly recommend this book as a tool not only to develop a positive emotional life but to deepen and transform your whole life experience.
A compassionate and genuinely helpful guide,

Fittingly, The Quiet Heart is a quiet book that adopts a gentle tone - the antithesis of so many strident 'Change Your Life in 24 hours' self-help manifestos. It consists of a series of clear and structured exercises to alter breathing, thought processes, feelings and reactions. The mood is always encouraging rather than didactic. To quote: "the emphasis is not on how successfully we manage them [the exercises]but that we are doing them at all". The author also believes that each individual should personalise the exercises so they have true meaning and relevance.
The text is punctuated by very credible case studies and testimonials. One writer describes how he began to do the exercises after "a lifetime of negative feelings...a year later my life is transformed...in Freud's phrase (though not with his treatment methods) `hysterical misery has been replaced by ordinary unhappiness". I find this account much more convincing and persuasive than a `miracle fix' tale.
Many of the author's concepts are esoteric yet the commonsense and physiologically sound backbone of this book make it a very practical manual. For the truly stressed and short of time key points are highlighted in bright yellow in the margins - a neat idea!
